OPT for F1 Students
OPT Timeline
  • Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study.
  • Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion).
  • Certain F-1 students who receive science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees may apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion optional practical training (OPT).

Different types of OPT
  • Pre completion OPT is for students who are working and studying at the same time.
  • Post completion OPT means that you are working after you graduated.
  • STEM OPT is for students with a degree in STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematiecs)
